Hundreds of Kyiv Buildings Lose Heat During Severe Frost

According to TSN.ua: An emergency situation persists in Kyiv as extreme cold weather leaves hundreds of residential buildings without heating and causes massive queues at bus stations. As of the morning of February 2, 2023, up to 200 buildings remain without heat. Most of the affected buildings are located on the city's Right Bank, specifically in the Solomianskyi and Pecherskyi districts. This crisis highlights the strain on Ukraine's urban infrastructure, which has faced immense challenges over the past year.

Apartment temperatures in the Troieshchyna district have dropped to as low as +7°C (45°F), creating significant discomfort for residents. Simultaneously, Kyiv's bus stations are reporting huge crowds of people attempting to leave the city or find shelter from the cold. The situation is exacerbated by abnormal 20-degree-below-zero frosts, with energy company DTEK reporting that the power grids cannot withstand the mass switching on of electric heaters and boilers.

“As of now, approximately 200 buildings remain without heating,” stated Kateryna Pop.

Meanwhile, Maksym Bakhmatov emphasized that 'there are no resources for major repairs,' which complicates solving the city's heating problem.

Urgent Measures Required to Resolve the Heating Crisis

The situation demands an immediate response, as the falling temperatures intensify the heating supply issues and create health risks for Kyiv's residents. The current crisis in Kyiv underscores the vulnerability of the city's infrastructure to extreme weather conditions. The lack of heating in many buildings could lead to serious health consequences, especially for children and the elderly. Authorities and responsible organizations must take urgent steps to restore heat supply, prevent similar crises in the future, and provide support for those left without warmth. Citizens, in turn, are advised to exercise caution and find ways to protect themselves from the cold until the situation is resolved.
