Heavy Snowfall Brings Kyiv to a Standstill, Causing Major Traffic Gridlock.
Kyiv Grinds to a Halt Under Heavy Snow, Creating Widespread Traffic Chaos
According to TSN.ua: A severe snowstorm struck Kyiv on February 5th, triggering a major transport collapse that caused significant traffic jams and severely disrupted movement across the city. The capital is experiencing temperatures of -8° Celsius with a relative humidity of 93% and an atmospheric pressure of 749 mmHg, creating treacherous driving conditions for motorists. Such winter storms are a recurring challenge for Ukrainian cities, testing their preparedness each year.
Key Highways Paralyzed by Congestion
Major traffic backups have been reported on several critical roadways, including:
- Darnytskyi Bridge
- Roman Shukhevych Avenue
- Heorhiy Narbut Avenue
Furthermore, the Zhytomyr highway leading into Kyiv is completely blocked, with heavy congestion also affecting the Odesa and Varshavska routes, as well as the road from Bila Tserkva. Drivers caught in these gridlocks are losing up to 46 minutes, significantly hampering their ability to move around the city.
The Kyiv City State Administration (KCMA) is implementing measures to improve the situation, prioritizing snow removal and the application of de-icing agents to roadways. However, conditions remain difficult for the time being, and drivers are advised to exercise extreme caution while navigating the city.
This severe weather event highlights the vulnerability of urban infrastructure to extreme natural phenomena. Major traffic disruptions can significantly impact business operations and the daily rhythm of life for residents. It is crucial for authorities not only to react to such crises but also to implement preventative measures to enhance the resilience of the city's infrastructure against harsh winter conditions.
