Heating System Burst Floods 'My Bookshelf' Store

According to TSN.ua: A burst heating pipe flooded the Kyiv bookstore 'My Bookshelf' with hot water, damaging nearly its entire inventory of 10,000 books. Only 400 volumes were spared from the destruction. The store's owners have launched a salvage operation to try and save what they can from the waterlogged collection.

Financial Impact and Recovery Initiatives

The incident occurred overnight on Sunday, inflicting a severe financial blow. The purchase value of the damaged stock was 1,766,160 Ukrainian hryvnias. For the past decade, the store has focused exclusively on promoting Ukrainian literature, refusing to stock Russian-language publications.

In a creative response, the owners announced the 'My Book Bath' initiative to sell the water-damaged books. Co-owner Melania Melnyk remarked,

"The former 'My Bookshelf' is now 'My Book Bath,' because the books have undergone steam-water treatments."

Co-owner Natalia Mospan added that this effort represented

"a restoration of our own identity."
The store is counting on community and literary enthusiast support during this difficult period. A further initiative, 'Wavy Books,' will also be launched to raise funds for the store's restoration and to rescue its literary offerings.

'My Bookshelf' has long been a vital hub for book lovers in Kyiv, and its owners are determined to resume operations and preserve this cultural space. This incident highlights the fragility of independent cultural businesses, which often operate on thin margins. The store's innovative fundraising efforts demonstrate how community support can be mobilized to overcome unexpected crises and safeguard important local institutions.
