Russian Assault Traps Miners in Kryvyi Rih, Leaves Seven Injured.
Kryvyi Rih Under Sustained Attack
According to TSN.ua: A combined Russian assault on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih lasted nearly a full day, damaging infrastructure, injuring seven people, and trapping 90 miners underground. The attack, which began on January 22, continued into the late night. Russian forces launched over 70 drones and an 'Iskander-M' ballistic missile. This industrial city, a key steel and mining hub, has been a frequent target since the invasion began.
Seven wounded individuals are being treated in city hospitals: four adults in moderately serious condition and three children in satisfactory condition. In total, hostile attacks have injured 12 people, including a two-year-old boy and three older children. Damage to infrastructure has left more than 3,100 subscribers without electricity.
Miners Rescued and Ukrainian Air Defense Response
Ninety miners were trapped in shafts due to the shelling; all were brought to the surface by the morning of January 23. In the night leading to January 23, Russians launched 101 attack drones, of which Ukrainian air defense shot down 76. Oleksandr Vilkul noted:
'Until late at night, the enemy continued to attack our city with strike UAVs. Overall, the combined attack lasted almost a day and was aimed at civilian infrastructure and facilities.'
He also reported that 'as a result of enemy attacks and damage to infrastructure facilities, more than 3,100 subscribers are without electricity,' adding that 'boiler houses were successfully restarted overnight and are operational.'
This attack on Kryvyi Rih highlights an escalation in hostilities and the enemy's attempt to destroy Ukraine's civilian infrastructure. Significant destruction and injuries among residents point to the serious threat faced by Ukrainian cities during the war. At the same time, the effectiveness of Ukrainian air defense, which managed to shoot down most of the drones, demonstrates Ukraine's ongoing efforts to protect its territory and population.
