Ukraine's Emergency 112 Line Now Handles Reports of Power, Water, and Heating Outages.
Emergency 112 Line Adapts to Energy Crisis
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine's national emergency number, 112, has expanded its services to accept reports about disruptions to heating, water, and electricity supplies. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that additional operators will be mobilized to handle the expected increase in calls. The information gathered by these operators will be forwarded directly to the headquarters in Kyiv responsible for managing the aftermath of Russian attacks on the country's energy infrastructure.
Citizens can reach the 112 line even without mobile service by connecting to an available Wi-Fi network. For added convenience, the 112 Ukraine mobile application, which can be downloaded in advance, is also an option. Minister Klymenko noted that operators will be able to provide callers with information on the nearest 'invincibility point' or public heating station. This expansion of services is a direct response to the severe strain placed on Ukraine's utilities by ongoing Russian missile and drone strikes.
Addressing Emergency Preparedness
This new function for the 112 line aims to improve the state's response to public needs during energy crises. The move follows criticism from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who on January 14 stated that the capital's authorities were insufficiently prepared for large-scale emergencies.
The introduction of this new capability is a critical step in ensuring citizen safety and comfort, particularly during the energy crises caused by targeted attacks. By bringing on extra operators and enabling contact via Wi-Fi, communication with the public is streamlined, which can significantly accelerate the response time of relevant services. These measures are also likely to bolster public trust in government authorities during an exceptionally challenging period for the nation.
