Fraud Allegations

According to TSN.ua: Nazariy Husakov, a resident of Lviv, is now suspected of embezzling 2 million Ukrainian hryvnias under the guise of fundraising for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) treatment. After returning from Italy, where he received medical care, the charges against him were revised, and the number of identified victims jumped from 34 to 96 individuals. The total damages attributed to Husakov also rose, from 1.3 million UAH to 2 million UAH.

Since June 2024, Husakov had been receiving his medication free of charge. A search of his residence led to the seizure of a mobile phone and USB flash drives, suggesting possible attempts to conceal evidence. Records show that in 2021, his account received transfers of approximately 25,000 UAH, raising further questions about the legitimacy of his financial dealings.

Public Reaction and Legal Proceedings

Authorities have now filed a motion in court requesting round-the-clock house arrest for Husakov. A key part of the case is his alleged failure to provide any accounting for the funds collected, which has complicated the investigation. Commenting on the situation, Ruslan Kravchenko stated:

“The suspect in the fraudulent fundraising for alleged SMA treatment returned to Ukraine after his stay in Italy, where he was undergoing therapy.” - Ruslan Kravchenko

This case has sparked significant public outcry, touching not only on financial fraud but also on the ethical dimensions of collecting donations for medical treatment. The outcome of upcoming court hearings is expected to bring clarity to the situation and determine the potential consequences for the accused.

The incident underscores the critical need for transparency in medical fundraising, as the abuse of donor trust can have severe repercussions—both for the victims and for the broader charitable system. As a result, the public is closely watching for decisive actions that could help prevent similar abuses in the future.
