Challenges Facing Ukrainian Refugee Families with Children

According to TSN.ua: A recent survey by the Center for Economic Strategy reveals that 47% of Ukrainian refugees with children believe their kids will never come back to Ukraine. This view is especially common among families whose children are not enrolled in Ukrainian schools. The findings highlight the deep difficulties faced by Ukrainian families who have fled abroad.

According to the survey data, 30% of parents reported that their children face no major challenges in their new country. Yet despite this, many children encounter a range of problems. The main difficulties include:

  • struggles with learning a new language,
  • homesickness,
  • separation from relatives,
  • trouble making friends,
  • and psychological issues.

These factors can significantly affect how children adapt to their new environment.

Proposed Solutions to Improve the Situation

To encourage children’s return to Ukraine, experts suggest several measures. These include:

  • expanding opportunities to take the National Multi-Subject Test (NMT) abroad,
  • simplifying the process for recognizing foreign diplomas,
  • maintaining children’s connection to Ukraine,
  • and organizing short trips back to their homeland.

Such steps could help families feel more stability and support during these difficult times.

The situation described in the survey reflects the long-term impact of war on Ukrainian families forced to leave the country. Children’s adaptation challenges may have far-reaching consequences for their future, underscoring the need for active government and societal efforts to support these families. Providing educational opportunities and preserving ties with Ukraine are crucial for maintaining the identity and cultural heritage of children living abroad.
