Russia's February 3rd Attack Cripples Ukraine's Power Grid, Hitting Dnipro and Kharkiv.
Coordinated Assault on Ukraine's Energy Infrastructure
According to UATV: On February 3, 2024, Russia launched a major, multi-vector assault on Ukraine's energy grid, causing severe damage in Dnipro, Kharkiv, and other regions. The attack, which combined drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles, struck during a severe cold snap with temperatures plummeting to -20°C (-4°F). These strikes are part of a wider Russian campaign to target civilian infrastructure during the winter months.
Dnipro was hit by attack drones and more than ten missiles. The bombardment damaged several private homes and critical infrastructure sites. Local residents described terrifying moments, with one woman recounting her experience:
“It was horrifying! The fear is indescribable, our beds were shaking.”
In Kharkiv, residential buildings, shops, and cars were struck, injuring four people. The city's mayor, Ihor Terekhov, commented on the situation, stating:
“The energy infrastructure that powers our city was damaged. They are hitting what keeps the city of Kharkiv alive.”Approximately 60% of subscribers in the Kharkiv region were left without electricity.
Widespread Fallout Across Multiple Regions
Beyond Kharkiv, the strike also affected the town of Lozova, as reported by the head of the regional administration, Oleh Syniehubov. The situation was similarly critical in other areas:
- In Vinnytsia Oblast, around 50 settlements lost power;
- In Odesa Oblast, more than 50,000 people were left without electricity;
- In Zaporizhzhia, over 12,000 subscribers were cut off from the grid.
This massive bombardment marks another tragic milestone in the ongoing energy conflict within Ukraine. The consequences of the attack are being felt nationwide, and repairing the energy infrastructure will require a significant effort. Restoring power is particularly urgent given the freezing conditions, as electricity is vital for heating and light.
Attacks on Ukraine's energy grid have become a central part of the war strategy, aimed at crippling the economy and breaking civilian morale. Authorities and energy companies are working to restore supply, but given the scale of the destruction, this task will demand considerable time and resources.
