After 2.5 Years in Captivity, an Azov Medic Lost Her Husband and Mother—Now She’s Starting Over in Lviv.

The Story of Tetiana Buhai

According to TSN.ua: Tetiana Buhai, a combat medic with the Azov Battalion, endured a series of devastating ordeals that reshaped her life. She witnessed the siege of Mariupol, lost both her husband and mother to the war, and spent two and a half years in Russian prisons. Now living in Lviv, she teaches military-patriotic education at the Lviv University of Internal Affairs. Her journey reflects the broader human cost of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, where countless families have been torn apart by conflict.

The siege of Mariupol marked a turning point for Tetiana. On March 26, she lost her husband, a border guard who was killed while transporting wounded soldiers out of the city.

“He was coming back from the city, carrying the wounded, and a sniper took him out,” Tetiana recalls of the tragedy that left a permanent scar on her heart.

Trials and a New Chapter

After these horrific events, Tetiana was taken captive and spent 30 months in detention. During that time, she lost 30 kilograms, enduring the full brutality of captivity.

“I knew I might be exchanged in 5 years—or in 10,” she says, describing her sense of despair and hopelessness.

Upon her return, Tetiana chose to rebuild her life in Lviv, where she now teaches at the Lviv University of Internal Affairs. This role represents a fresh start, allowing her to pass on her knowledge and experience to a younger generation. Today, Tetiana Buhai stands as a symbol of resilience and strength, embodying how Ukrainians confront the hardships of war.
