Rescuers continue to clean up the aftermath of the Russian drone strike on the Chornobyl NPP. This was reported by the head of the State Emergency Service Andriy Danyk during a briefing near the damaged shelter of the station.

Currently, at 15:00, burning of the insulation is not observed, rescuers are working on partially uncovering the structures of the shelter and filling voids with firefighting substances.

The work of the rescuers is complicated by low temperatures, snow, and icing. They are working directly outside the protective structure, at a height of over 100 meters.

The air quality at the site near the Chernobyl NPP is constantly monitored. The radiation background does not exceed normal values.

President Volodymyr Zelensky reported that a Russian drone with chemical munitions hit the shelter at the Chornobyl NPP. The fire has been extinguished, the radiation background has not changed, but the damage to the shelter is serious.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed that an explosion occurred above the sarcophagus protecting the remains of the 4th reactor at night on February 14, which caused the fire.

The sarcophagus had been in operation for about 20-40 years, so a new shelter was built in the 2000s. Construction of the structure began in 2012 and was completed in 2019.

About 400 thousand cubic meters of concrete mixture and 7 thousand tons of metal structures were used for the construction of the new shelter. The construction lasted 206 days and involved 90 thousand people.

The State Emergency Service states that the radiation background after the Russian drone strike on the shelter of the fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP is normal.
