Poland's New Migration Strategy: EU Warned the Country About the Risk of Violating International Obligations.
EU Criticizes Poland for Migrant Plans
The European Union is concerned about Poland's new plans regarding the refusal of migrants at the border with Belarus, as it violates the country's human rights obligations. Under Warsaw's proposal, announced by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, a "temporary territorial suspension of the right to asylum" will be implemented.
A representative of the European Commission emphasizes that member states must uphold their international and European obligations, particularly to ensure access to the asylum procedure.
Alexander Lukashenko, the President of Belarus, actively encourages migrants to seek refuge in Belarus and then attempts to bring them to the Polish border, preventing them from returning. Warsaw has not yet announced at which border sections its plans will be applied and how they conform to international humanitarian law.
The Commission's representative highlights the need for a European solution that can counter hybrid attacks from Putin and Lukashenko without retreating from EU values. It is noted that the migrant crisis, which resulted in approximately 26,000 people arriving in Poland this year alone, demonstrates that Russia and Belarus are using EU values against it and undermining democracy.
The European Commission previously opposed similar proposals from Hungary, which led to threats of sending buses of refugees to Brussels.
