Russia's New Energy War: 16-Hour Daily Blackouts Hit Ukrainian Cities.
Russia's Shift in Strategy Against Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Russian forces have adopted a new tactic in Ukraine, concentrating their strikes on energy infrastructure to cripple the power supply in specific regions for extended periods. According to Oleksandr Kharchenko, Director of the Energy Research Center, this approach involves focusing attacks on a single area to deprive it of electricity for a long time.
Targeting Critical Areas
This 'scorched-earth' tactic against energy grids has already been deployed in Odesa, where power was cut for two weeks. Russian strikes are now primarily aimed at four key urban centers:
- Kyiv
- Odesa
- Dnipro
- Kryvyi Rih
The implementation of this strategy has resulted in daily blackouts exceeding 16 hours for many residents. Serhii Kovalenko confirmed that this prolonged lack of power is now a grim reality for people in these cities. This systematic targeting of civilian energy supplies represents a significant escalation in the conflict's humanitarian impact.
Consequently, Russia's new method is having a severe effect on Ukraine's energy security, creating extremely difficult conditions for civilians and critical infrastructure. The targeted regions—Kyiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Kryvyi Rih—face repeated attacks that hinder the restoration of normal power supply. This situation risks increasing social strain among the population and underscores the urgent need for measures to stabilize the country's energy grid.
