The Next Phase of Drone Warfare in Ukraine: A 12–18 Month Forecast.
Forecasting the Drone War in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Maria Berlinska, head of the Victory Drones project, anticipates a new and intensified stage of drone warfare in Ukraine over the next 12 to 18 months. This period will likely see a massive increase in drone deployments, including an expansion of the capabilities for 'Shahed'-type drones already in use. Furthermore, Russia may be preparing for large-scale operations involving hundreds of drones, signaling a clear intent to escalate the unmanned component of the conflict. The use of such Iranian-made loitering munitions has become a defining feature of Russian strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure.
Technological Innovation in Warfare
Berlinska noted that a key development will be the potential integration of air, ground, and maritime unmanned systems into a cohesive network. She emphasized that
“whoever possesses the longer strike 'arm' and faster decision-making—particularly through online control or autonomy—will hold a significant advantage.”This highlights how technological innovation, speed, and efficiency are becoming decisive factors in modern combat.
She also pointed to the formidable challenge posed by allied adversaries, stating
“working against us are combined engineering teams from Russia, China, and Iran. This is a technological war machine involving hundreds of thousands of people.”Consequently, advancing Ukraine's own drone systems and countermeasures is not just a strategic necessity but an urgent requirement for national defense.
The prospect of creating a unified 'robot army'—where machines communicate with each other and receive tasks remotely from large screens—is also a relevant and potentially game-changing concept for future battles.
According to these forecasts, shifts in unmanned technology could substantially influence the course of the military conflict in Ukraine, underlining the critical importance of timely investment in these innovations. This analysis underscores the growing role of drones in contemporary warfare and the need for their continuous improvement to ensure defensive effectiveness. Given the active developments by Russia and its allies in this domain, it is vital for Ukraine not only to advance its own drone technology but to fully integrate it into the broader military framework for maximum impact. Drones may prove to be a decisive factor in future combat, making investment in their development and refinement key to sustaining national security.
