Illienko Warns Withdrawal from Donbas Would Spell Disaster for Ukraine.
Concerns Over a Potential Ukrainian Pullout from Donbas
According to TSN.ua: Andriy Illienko, a former lawmaker and current officer with the Svoboda battalion, has voiced alarm over the prospect of withdrawing Ukrainian forces from Donbas, calling it a potentially catastrophic move for the nation. He argued that Russia could resume its offensive at any moment, rendering any ceasefire ineffective on the front lines.
“It’s simply impossible, and it won’t happen. I’m certain of that,” he said, highlighting the dangers of retreat.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has also weighed in, stating that negotiations with Russia have yielded no results. On March 31, 2023, he reported that the Kremlin had set a new deadline for seizing Donbas. Illienko added that
“Russia will come up with something in a week, or a day, or a minute—saying, 'Ukraine has broken the ceasefire.'”He reminded that Moscow has ignored previous so-called truces, fueling further anxiety.
Frontline Reality and International Reactions
Illienko believes pulling defense forces out of Donbas would mean surrendering a fortified area that Russia has failed to capture for over four years. In his words,
“It would mean handing over to the enemy a stronghold they haven’t been able to take in more than four years.”Meanwhile, Zelensky noted that instead of constructive dialogue, Russia issues ultimatums, casting doubt on any peaceful resolution.
Regarding the Easter ceasefire, Illienko urged caution, stressing the gravity of the frontline situation. His warnings about the risks of a potential Ukrainian withdrawal echo recent statements by President Zelensky and criticism from international observers, including Marco Rubio, who claimed that
“These words from President Zelensky are a lie.”
The concerns raised by Illienko and Zelensky over a possible Ukrainian pullout from Donbas underscore the critical need for stability in the region, especially amid the ongoing threat from Russia. Such statements could shape strategic decisions by Ukraine’s leadership, as the frontline remains tense and unpredictable. The stance of international partners will also prove crucial in future negotiations and conflict-resolution strategies.
