Kyiv’s Bulgakov Monument Cost $70,000 – Who Really Funded It?.
The Story Behind the Mikhail Bulgakov Monument
According to Espreso.tv: Journalist Maryna Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva has shed light on the history of the Mikhail Bulgakov monument, erected in Kyiv in 2007. The structure came with a price tag of $70,000, which she suspects was financed using Russian money. Although Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko was originally scheduled to attend the unveiling, his visit was postponed due to a gas explosion in Dnipro.
The Bulgakov monument has long been a topic of heated debate. Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva noted that discussions around it have persisted for many years. She emphasized that
“it is highly likely that this was Russian money”— referring to the funding behind the monument. This issue has stirred public controversy, as Bulgakov’s figure, despite its immense cultural significance, is tied to complex aspects of both Ukrainian and Russian history.
Removal of the Monument and Its Implications
On June 4, 2023, the Bulgakov monument was dismantled, sparking a fresh wave of public discourse. Commenting on the event, Danyliuk-Yarmolaieva posed the question:
“But imagine if that one had remained—what photos would all those defenders be circulating now?”This highlights how the debate over monuments and their role in Ukraine’s historical memory remains highly relevant.
The story of the Mikhail Bulgakov monument in Kyiv is not just a historical matter but also a socio-political one, continuing to provoke discussion within Ukrainian society. Its removal marks a shift in attitudes toward cultural symbols linked to Russian influence amid today’s political realities. This, in turn, underscores the importance of reevaluating historical memory in the context of Ukraine’s national identity.
