January 20th Attack on Kyiv

According to TSN.ua: A Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv on January 20th has severely damaged the city's energy infrastructure. The assault left roughly half of the city's residential buildings without heating, affecting approximately 5,635 apartment blocks. This figure represents 80% of the buildings that had just had heat restored following previous strikes on January 9th. Furthermore, 173,000 customers were left without electricity, with the most severe conditions reported in the Desnianskyi and Pecherskyi districts.

District-by-District Impact

In the Desnianskyi district, nearly 100% of residential buildings are without both heat and electricity. Water supply is also almost entirely absent in the Desnianskyi, Darnytskyi, and Dniprovskyi districts. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that Russian forces targeted the capital's energy infrastructure overnight. Serhii Kovalenko noted that currently about half of the city's housing stock remains without heating.

The consequences of the bombardment have critically disrupted life in the capital, and emergency crews are now working to restore power and heating systems. These repeated attacks on civilian infrastructure are part of a wider Russian strategy that has been ongoing since the winter of 2022. The situation in Kyiv following the January 20th strike underscores the vulnerability of the city's energy grid, which had already sustained serious damage from previous assaults. Failures in heating and water supply pose a severe threat to residents, especially during the cold winter months. City authorities are concentrating efforts on restoring critical services, but the process may take considerable time due to the scale of the destruction.
