Walking Around the Moon Would Take a Year and a Half: Here’s the Math Behind the Journey.
How Long Would It Take to Walk Around the Moon?
According to TSN.ua: Researchers have analyzed the feasibility of a lunar circumnavigation on foot, drawing on data from the Apollo missions and modern experiments. The Moon’s equatorial circumference measures roughly 10,920 kilometers, making such a trek an extraordinarily ambitious endeavor. With gravity only one-sixth of Earth’s, astronauts would face unique challenges in determining their pace.
Astronaut Walking Speeds
During the Apollo missions, astronauts moved at about 2.2 kilometers per hour—a significant slowdown compared to Earth. Today’s flexible space suits allow for speeds up to 5 kilometers per hour. At that rate, walking nonstop along the lunar equator would take approximately 91 days. However, an astronaut can only be active for 4 to 5 hours per day, covering roughly 20 kilometers in that window.
As a result, a complete lunar circumnavigation on foot could last about a year and a half—or roughly 547 days. This highlights the immense physical demands and logistical hurdles of such an expedition, given the constraints of human endurance and the harsh lunar environment. Studying these factors helps scientists better understand the challenges astronauts might face during extended stays on the Moon.
This research underscores not only the physical obstacles but also the critical role of technological advances in space exploration. Preparing for long-duration lunar missions will require meticulous planning and a deep understanding of the conditions astronauts will encounter. The findings could inform future missions to the Moon and even pave the way for trips to Mars, where conditions may be even more extreme.
