Ukraine Braces for Severe Winter Weather on February 18: Ice, Wind, and Widespread Flooding.
Weather Forecast for Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Meteorologists are warning of a severe weather system hitting Ukraine on February 18, bringing precipitation, icy glaze, and strong, gusty winds. Air temperatures across most regions are expected to range from -5 to -9 degrees Celsius, dropping to between -10 and -15 in the north. Daytime highs may reach -2 to -7 degrees, while southern Ukraine could see temperatures from 0 to +3 degrees. In Crimea, temperatures may climb as high as +5 to +10 degrees.
'This time its trajectory will pass a bit further south, so it will affect the west and north on February 18, but, I hope, not with too much precipitation,' said weather forecaster Natalka Didenko.
These complex and hazardous conditions are likely to cause significant problems in Ukraine's central regions. This severe weather event follows a period of fluctuating temperatures that has already stressed infrastructure.
Impact of the Severe Weather
Extensive flooding has already been reported in the Cherkasy, Poltava, Kirovohrad, Kharkiv, and Odesa regions. In the Poltava region, private homes have been flooded due to rain and melting snow. In Kirovohrad Oblast, farmsteads in 25 communities are underwater. Flooding in the Kharkiv region has been recorded in the Izium, Berestiv, and Kharkiv districts.
A sustained warming trend with a thaw is forecast to begin around February 22–23, which could lead to a further worsening of the situation in the affected areas. It is crucial to monitor weather updates and be prepared for potential consequences.
These significant weather changes in Ukraine can impact daily life, agriculture, and critical infrastructure. Forecaster predictions highlight the need for preparedness for outcomes such as:
- Flooding
- Deteriorating road conditions
This poses risks to public safety. The situation in regions already experiencing flooding requires particular attention, as the anticipated warming could exacerbate conditions.
