Project Implementation of the SAN Anti-Drone System

According to UATV: Poland is launching the implementation of its SAN anti-drone system project, with a budget exceeding $4 billion. The project is scheduled for completion within two years and will be executed by a consortium that includes the Polish Armaments Group and a Norwegian company. This development comes as NATO's eastern flank faces increased aerial threats, making such systems a critical investment. The SAN system will serve as a vital component in defending Poland's eastern border, which also constitutes the frontier for Europe and NATO.

System Capabilities and Strategic Significance

The SAN anti-drone system will be composed of anti-aircraft batteries, each consisting of three fire platoons and one support platoon. It will be capable of autonomously detecting, tracking, identifying, and destroying aerial targets. According to Donald Tusk,

“the SAN system will be capable of countering not only strike drones like the 'Shahed' and 'Gerbera,' but also smaller unmanned aerial vehicles.”

The urgency of deploying this system was underscored by a Russian drone attack on Poland on September 10. Tusk noted that the country is now witnessing an 'absolute breakthrough in effective and functional defense' of its eastern border.

The deployment of the SAN system highlights Poland's heightened focus on national security amid escalating tensions along Europe's eastern flank. This acquisition of advanced air defense technology reflects not only immediate military needs but also Poland's political commitments within the NATO alliance. The move is likely to influence the defense strategies of other regional nations, potentially encouraging them to modernize their own protective systems.
