When Easter is Celebrated in 2026
Easter is the most important event of the calendar for Orthodox Christians.
According to the New Julian calendar, which is used by the OCU and the UGCC, on April 12, Orthodox Christians in Ukraine will celebrate the Resurrection of Christ.
For Christians of the Western rite, Easter falls on April 5.
Main Church Holidays of 2026: The Twelve Major Feasts
After Easter, the important events of the Orthodox calendar are the 12 major feasts. Eight of them are related to the life of Jesus Christ, and four are associated with the Holy Virgin Mary.
Three celebrations are movable, so their dates change each year, while nine have fixed dates.
The list of the twelve major feasts for 2026 according to the New Julian calendar:
Theophany (Baptism of the Lord) — January 6;
Meeting of the Lord — February 2;
Annunciation of the Holy Virgin Mary — March 25;
Palm Sunday (Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem) — April 5 (movable feast);
The Ascension of the Lord — May 21 (movable feast);
Holy Trinity (Pentecost) — May 31 (movable feast);
The Transfiguration of the Lord — August 6;
The Dormition of the Holy Virgin Mary — August 15;
The Nativity of the Holy Virgin Mary — September 8;
The Exaltation of the Holy Cross — September 14;
The Entry into the Temple of the Holy Virgin Mary — November 21;
The Nativity of Christ — December 25.

Fasts of 2026: When Orthodox Christians Fast
In the Orthodox tradition, there are one-day and multi-day fasts. Wednesday and Friday during meat weeks are also fasting days.
In total, the year has 27 fasting weeks, which totals 189 days.
In addition, there are continuous (common) weeks, when fasting on Wednesday and Friday is not observed.

Great Fast — from February 23 to April 11;
