Lynx Numbers in Ukraine Cut in Half According to Latest Monitoring Data.
Population Status of the Eurasian Lynx in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Experts are growing increasingly concerned about the true size of Ukraine's lynx population. Recent monitoring suggests the actual number of these predators is far lower than official estimates. While authorities previously claimed around 500 lynx live in the country, with roughly 400 in the Carpathians and about 100 in Polissia, specialists now believe the real figure falls somewhere between 250 and 300 individuals.
Researchers are intensifying their tracking efforts, particularly in the Uzhanskyi National Nature Park. They rely on a range of tools, including camera traps and synchronized observation methods. According to expert Ihor Dykyi:
'We are currently in the process of determining the actual population size.' Ihor Dykyi
Dykyi also warns that the earlier estimate of 500 lynx is rough and likely inaccurate. 'In reality, it could be that one male is marking the same territory. But in fact, there might be only three males constantly moving around in search of a female,' he explains.
In the Skole Beskids National Nature Park, a lynx with a cub was recently spotted—a positive sign that reproduction is occurring in the area. However, lynx movement between regions, especially during mating seasons, can skew population counts. These animals are known to travel over 20 kilometers to find a mate.
Declining Lynx Numbers in Ukraine
The challenge of accurately counting lynx in Ukraine remains pressing. Specialists are working to refine their monitoring techniques to obtain more reliable data on this elusive species.
The drop in lynx numbers is troubling not only for scientists but also for broader biodiversity conservation efforts. As top predators, lynx play a crucial ecological role by controlling populations of other animals. Ensuring effective protection and monitoring measures is essential to prevent further decline. The success of these initiatives could be a key step in preserving this species in Ukraine.
