Massive Missile and Drone Barrage Targets Ukraine

According to TSN.ua: On February 7, 2023, Russia launched a large-scale missile and drone assault across Ukraine, deliberately targeting the energy infrastructure in the country's western regions. The attack focused on the Burshtynska and Dobrotvirska thermal power plants (TPPs). The strikes caused damage to substations and high-voltage power lines rated at 750 kV and 330 kV.

Consequences for the National Energy System

As a result of the attacks, Ukraine's nuclear power plants were forced to reduce their electricity output, creating a major deficit in the power supply. To stabilize the national grid, the system operator 'Ukrenergo' has implemented emergency measures, including:

  • Importing electricity from neighboring countries;
  • Enforcing emergency power shutdowns for consumers.

On orders from Ukrenergo, the scale of these blackouts was increased, leaving most regions under emergency power rationing schedules. These attacks are part of a sustained Russian campaign to cripple Ukraine's civilian infrastructure during the ongoing war.

The situation underscores the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy infrastructure and its critical reliance on the stable operation of thermal and nuclear power plants. Persistent strikes on energy facilities amid the conflict pose severe challenges to national energy security, with potentially far-reaching consequences for the economy and daily life. Repairing and defending this infrastructure remains a top priority for Ukraine as the war continues.
