Ukraine's Human Rights Chief Reports 337 Prisoners of War Executed by Russia by End of 2025.
The Plight of Ukrainian Prisoners of War
According to TSN.ua: According to Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets, Russian forces had executed 337 Ukrainian prisoners of war by the end of 2025. These actions represent severe violations of human rights and international laws governing the treatment of captives. The systematic nature of these abuses underscores a deliberate policy of brutality in the ongoing conflict.
UN data indicates that over 95% of Ukrainian POWs endure systematic torture.
Dmytro Lubinets stated that 'Russia has turned torture into state policy and uses it as a weapon.'This grim reality highlights the horrific conditions faced by Ukrainian soldiers in captivity, a situation that has drawn condemnation from global human rights organizations.
Repatriation Efforts for Ukrainian Captives
Despite the challenges, 6,422 Ukrainians have been successfully returned from Russian captivity. This group includes:
- 409 civilians
- 2,016 children
However, executions and torture remain a critical issue. For instance, on December 20, Russian troops shot three Ukrainian soldiers south of Huliaipole, and on December 27, they executed two more Ukrainian defenders in the Pokrovsk district. These incidents illustrate the extreme peril facing captured personnel and demand urgent international scrutiny.
The ongoing executions and torture of Ukrainian POWs constitute a grave breach of international humanitarian law, threatening fundamental legal principles and requiring an immediate global response. This crisis calls for more robust intervention by international bodies, including the United Nations, to enforce human rights protections in wartime and hold perpetrators accountable.
