Ukrainian Official Reports 688 Child Fatalities to UN, Citing Russian Aggression.
Child Casualties in the Ukraine Conflict
According to UATV: During an interactive dialogue with a UN representative, Ukrainian Ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets detailed the severe toll on children resulting from Russian aggression, including widespread infrastructure destruction. According to Lubinets, since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion, 688 children have been killed and 2,392 have been injured. Furthermore, at least 23 cases of sexual violence have been registered in Ukraine. These figures underscore the devastating human cost of a war that has raged since February 2022.
Infrastructure Destruction and Child Deportation
The systematic destruction of civilian infrastructure is a major concern. The reported damage includes:
- 4,505 educational institutions;
- 2,551 medical facilities.
Lubinets also highlighted that since 2014, Russia has been illegally deporting Ukrainian children, with hundreds of known locations inside Russia where minors are taken. Since the full-scale invasion began, 2,000 deported children have been returned to Ukraine from occupied territories and Russia.
"There, they are subjected to ideological re-education and militarization. These are direct proofs of war crimes and crimes against humanity."
Dmytro Lubinets
These statements emphasize the importance of the 'If You Know, Speak Up!' information campaign, which aims to draw attention to these grave issues and protect children's rights in Ukraine.
The issues of child casualties and infrastructure destruction remain critically important topics of international concern. The information provided by the ombudsman highlights not only a humanitarian catastrophe but also ongoing human rights violations on Ukrainian territory. Continuing this information campaign could help galvanize global attention on the war's impacts and facilitate necessary aid for the victims.
