Study Reveals Pink Noise Disrupts Deep Sleep Phases.
How Pink Noise Affects Sleep Quality
According to TSN.ua: A study from the University of Pennsylvania has found that pink noise can harm sleep quality by reducing the duration of REM sleep and impacting deep sleep. In the experiment, 25 adults slept in a laboratory under different background sounds. The results indicated that aircraft noise shortened deep sleep by approximately 23 minutes, while pink noise cut REM sleep by nearly 19 minutes.
The combination of aircraft and pink noise worsened participants' sleep parameters even further. They woke up more frequently and reported their sleep felt shallower and less restorative. These findings underscore the critical role of quality sleep for overall health. As researcher Mathias Basner notes,
"REM sleep is crucial for memory, emotional regulation, and brain development."Pink noise, often marketed for sleep, contains more low-frequency energy than white noise.
Children's Vulnerability and Practical Advice
The researchers also highlighted children's particular vulnerability to disruptions in REM sleep, pointing to a need for more investigation in this area. Importantly, the study found that earplugs partly offset the negative impact of noise, offering a practical solution for those facing similar sleep disturbances.
Given these results, this research could significantly shape our understanding of how environmental factors affect sleep. Special attention should be paid to potential risks for children, as sleep disruptions early in life may have long-term developmental consequences. The study also reinforces the value of using protective measures like earplugs to improve sleep quality in noisy environments.
