Golden Jackals Expand Northward: Wildlife Shifts in Central Ukraine.
Shifting Habitats: The Northward Movement of Jackals in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Wildlife distribution in Ukraine is undergoing significant change, with species like the golden jackal now appearing more frequently in central regions and the Carpathian foothills. Historically confined to the southern and eastern steppes, these animals are migrating deeper into the country, a movement scientists link to climate shifts and the search for new food sources. This expansion is part of a broader pattern of wildlife adapting to environmental changes across Europe.
Biologist Mykola Rozhenko, a candidate of biological sciences, notes that jackals typically avoid human contact. However, they can pose a danger if infected with rabies. This incurable viral disease attacks the nervous system and can lead to erratic and aggressive animal behavior.
'The primary danger from a jackal arises if it is rabid. Its behavior then becomes completely abnormal: it may attack domestic animals or even charge at a person,' emphasizes Mykola Rozhenko.
Domestic poultry—such as chickens, geese, and ducks—as well as the young of cattle and small livestock are at risk from jackal predation. Attacks on farm animals have already been recorded in the Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi district. In light of these incidents, experts advise local residents to take precautions:
- strengthen the security of farmyards and enclosures;
- remain vigilant and monitor the behavior of any wild animals to prevent potential dangers.
The changing range of jackals in Ukraine highlights how wild animals are adapting to new conditions, likely driven by climate change and human activity. This underscores the need to monitor wildlife populations and implement measures to protect both wild and domestic animals from emerging ecosystem threats. Public awareness is crucial in areas where species previously unseen are now establishing themselves.
