Ukrainian Security Service Uncovers Priest's Scheme to Illegally Transfer Church Property.
Priest of Moscow-Affiliated Church Exposed in Property Fraud
According to TSN.ua: The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police have exposed a priest from the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of the Moscow Patriarchate (UOC-MP) for illegally transferring ownership of a church building in the Kyiv region to his personal charitable foundation. The property under investigation is valued at nearly 6 million Ukrainian hryvnias.
According to the investigation, the congregation of the St. Demetrius Parish in the city of Brovary voted to join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine in April 2024. However, the priest attempted to legitimize his actions by forging the minutes of the congregation's meeting, which provided the legal grounds for law enforcement to intervene. This case highlights the ongoing tensions within Ukraine's religious communities following the 2019 establishment of the independent Orthodox Church of Ukraine.
Legal Repercussions
The suspect has been formally notified of suspicion under Part 5 of Article 191 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He faces a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison with confiscation of property. A pre-trial investigation is currently underway to establish all the circumstances of the case and bring those responsible to justice.
This situation reflects the complex socio-religious dynamics in Ukraine, where the transfer of parishes between different church jurisdictions is often accompanied by conflict and legal disputes. The investigation into the priest could have broad implications, both for the local community and for the reputation of the Moscow Patriarchate's church in Ukraine, especially against the backdrop of the country's ongoing ecclesiastical realignment since Russia's full-scale invasion.
