Elephant Dies After Photo Shoot in Jaipur, Sparking Animal Cruelty Allegations Against Owners.
Death of Chanchal the Elephant in Jaipur
According to TSN.ua: A 65-year-old elephant named Chanchal, who gained attention after a photo session with Russian photographer Yulia Buruleva, has died in Jaipur. Her death was attributed to old age, but animal rights activists have raised concerns about the exploitation of animals in such activities.
Chanchal passed away in February 2026. She lived in the Hathi Gaon area of Jaipur, commonly referred to as the "elephant village." In November 2025, Chanchal was painted a bright pink color for the photo shoot. Images of the pink elephant first emerged in December 2025. The "gulal" powder was applied quickly, mostly on one side, and was washed off within about half an hour.
Debate Over Elephant Care Conditions
Balu Khan, president of the local committee who has overseen animal care for the "last five generations," stated:
"The filming lasted about 10 minutes. The raw gulal was applied and immediately washed off." - Balu Khan
This incident has sparked debate among animal rights advocates, who have expressed alarm over the conditions in which elephants are kept and their exploitation for tourism.
Chanchal's death has drawn attention to broader issues surrounding the use of wild animals in the tourism industry and their living conditions. Activists are calling for a review of practices that may harm animals, emphasizing that elephants, like other wildlife, require proper care and respect for their natural habitat. This case could serve as a catalyst for changes in legislation and approaches to wildlife conservation in India and beyond.
