Attorney General: the most accusations in cases of illegal border crossing are recorded in the Odessa region

The Attorney General of Ukraine, Andriy Kostin, reported that in the Odessa region since the beginning of 2024, the highest number of indictments against members of groups organizing illegal border crossings has been recorded. He said this in a comment to Liga.net.

The Chief Prosecutor pointed out a problem illustrated by the escape of Member of Parliament Artem Dmitruk: The State Border Service lacks the resources to fully ensure the security of the border.

«A large number of border guards are constantly fighting in the Defense Forces. They need help with the technical equipment of the border, which is between the checkpoints, and with the physical protection of the border. This requires money and Time. I believe that they need to allocate funds and start working on the most risky sections», Kostin noted.

Kostin emphasized that the Odessa region has one of the most risky border sections. In the first half of 2024, six indictments related to criminal groups working on illegal border crossings were sent to court there. This number is the highest in Ukraine.

Earlier it was reported that border guards from the Podilsk detachment, together with law enforcement officers, detained a large group of men in the Odessa region who planned to illegally cross the border.

At a meeting with the heads of law enforcement and anti-corruption bodies held by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on August 26, issues of illegal border crossing and the fight against collaborators were discussed. A plan to address these problems is expected to be presented within two weeks.

By the way, eight residents of Gagauzia, including two employees of the Border Police, were placed under preliminary arrest for 30 days. The investigation stated that the detainees organized a scheme for the illegal migration of men from Ukraine, receiving from €6,000 to €8,000 per person.
