Ukrainian Bishop Detained on Charges of Issuing Fake Clergy Certificates to Draft Dodgers.
Bishop Kyryl Faces Court
According to TSN.ua: A court in Ivano-Frankivsk has ordered the detention of Bishop Kyryl (Mykhailiuk) of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine (OCU). He is suspected of issuing fraudulent ordination certificates to men seeking to avoid military mobilization. The court initially ordered a 60-day pre-trial detention, but allowed the bishop to be released on bail of 233,000 hryvnias.
Bishop Kyryl, the former head of the OCU's Uzhhorod-Khust Diocese, is accused of providing military-age men with fake documents certifying their ordination as deacons. According to the investigation, he charged between $1,000 and $2,000 USD for this service. His alleged actions are said to have enabled approximately 40 individuals to dodge the draft.
Repercussions and Response
In response to these events, the OCU's Synod has suspended Bishop Kyryl from leading the Uzhhorod Diocese. He is currently being held at Correctional Facility No. 12 in Ivano-Frankivsk. The investigation is ongoing, and further details are expected as the case proceeds.
This case has sparked significant public outcry, highlighting the serious issue of draft evasion in Ukraine during wartime. The scandal threatens to damage the reputation of the OCU and has ignited a debate on the ethical responsibilities of the clergy. It may also prompt increased scrutiny of religious organizations in matters related to national security. This incident underscores the intense pressures within Ukrainian society since Russia's full-scale invasion, where military service is a critical and sensitive matter.
