The 17th Nest of the Rare White-tailed Eagle Found in the Chernobyl Zone.
According to ТСН: The population of white-tailed eagles in the Chernobyl exclusion zone is steadily increasing. Recently, scientists from the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve recorded the 17th nest of this red-listed predator.
Reserve specialists note that the search for nesting sites began back in July near the village of Kupovate, where ornithologists spotted three young birds. One of them was flying unsteadily, indicating the proximity of the nest.
“Despite careful searches, the nest could not be found then — the dense summer foliage in the willow thicket concealed all possible landmarks. It was decided to return in autumn when the tree canopy would open the view and allow for a more thorough examination of the area. This tactic proved entirely successful: after a re-survey, the nest was discovered,” the reserve reported.
This is the 17th confirmed nest of the white-tailed eagle within the Chernobyl reserve.
“This is yet another important proof of the stability and expansion of the population of this rare species in the region,” representatives of the reserve assured.
Today, the white-tailed eagle is classified as a rare species, included in the Red Data Book of Ukraine, and is protected by international conventions. The overall population of these birds in Ukraine is estimated by ornithologists at 180–200 pairs. The exclusion zone remains one of the most important reserves for the conservation of this majestic predator.
Let us remind you that the Chernobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve has released unique footage from camera traps. The lenses of the cameras captured a night walk of Przewalski's horses — the only surviving species of wild horses in nature.
As seen, the Chernobyl exclusion zone plays an important role in preserving biodiversity. The increasing population of white-tailed eagles and observations of other rare species indicate positive changes in the ecosystem, which start to recover after prolonged pollution. These are important steps towards ensuring the resilience of natural systems in the region.
