US Suspends Green Card Lottery: Decision Following Immigrant Incident

According to ТСН: US Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem announced the suspension of the Diversity Visa 1 program (Green Card lottery). This decision comes in the wake of a recent attack carried out by an immigrant who entered the country through this program.

Noem noted that this program poses a threat to US national security.

“The shooter from Brown University, Claudio Manuel Neves Valente, entered the United States in 2017 through the Diversity Visa (DV1) immigration program and obtained a Green Card. This horrific individual should have never been allowed to enter our country,”

— her statement reads.

The Secretary also reminded that in 2017, US President Donald Trump attempted to terminate this program after a terrorist attack when an ISIS terrorist used a DV1 visa to carry out a truck attack in New York, killing eight people.

“By the directive of President Trump, I am immediately instructing the US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to suspend the DV1 program to prevent further harm to Americans from this catastrophic program,”

— she emphasized.

Moreover, as of October 16, registration for the Green Card lottery has become paid: each application requires a payment of 1 dollar through the official US portal. The State Department implemented this innovation to cover the administrative costs of the program, modernize security systems, and combat fraudulent applications.

Transitioning from free registration to paid registration, as well as suspending the DV1 program, could be important steps towards enhancing US national security. In light of recent events, such changes may spark considerable resonance and further discussions regarding the country's immigration policy.
