Russia shelled the historic center of Odesa, damaging cultural heritage sites
Russia shelled the historic center of Odesa, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. This resulted in the damage of 15 cultural heritage monuments. This was reported by Odesa's mayor Gennadiy Trukhanov.
One of the most prominent buildings in the central part of the city - the 'Bristol' hotel - suffered significant destruction, as did surrounding historic buildings. About 15 cultural heritage monuments were damaged, such as broken window glass and displaced carpentry. This information was included in the report.
Among the damaged objects are two monuments of national significance:
- Philharmonic (New Exchange),
- Vuchini House (Italianska St, 19),
- Museum of Western and Eastern Art,
- Branch of the Literary Museum (Sikara House).
In particular, stained glass and the carpentry of large windows in the buildings of the Union of Architects of Ukraine and the 'Porto-Franco' bank were significantly damaged. This information was also provided by Odesa's mayor.
The Philharmonic is the most valuable building from an architectural and social standpoint among the affected. It suffered damages such as broken window glass, damaged stained glass, and interior decoration. The exact impact of the attack on the main structures of the building will be determined after additional inspections, Trukhanov noted.
Since 2023, the Philharmonic has been under enhanced protection by UNESCO.
Recall that after the enemy shelling of the center of Odesa on January 31, seven people were injured. This was reported by the head of the Odesa Regional Military Administration Oleg Kiper.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that among those who were in the epicenter of the shelling were representatives of Norway.
