Ukraine Finds Alternative as Hungary Threatens to Halt Gas Transit.
Gas Supplies from Hungary to Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Despite threats from Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to potentially cut off deliveries, Ukraine continues to receive gas from Hungary. This was confirmed by Heorhii Tykhyi, spokesperson for Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, during a briefing on March 25.
Tykhyi pointed out that Hungary earned over one billion dollars from gas transit last year. He also addressed the possible economic fallout for Hungary if Orbán follows through on his threat.
“If Prime Minister Orbán ultimately decides to stop it [gas transit], we believe the only consequence will be depriving the Hungarian economy of more than a billion dollars, which Hungary earned, for example, over the past year,”he emphasized.
Energy Security and Economic Implications
Furthermore, Tykhyi assured that Ukraine currently has sufficient gas reserves and will continue to receive supplies even if Hungary halts deliveries. It is worth noting that Budapest has issued an ultimatum related to oil transit and domestic fuel prices, which could affect future negotiations between the two countries.
The gas supply situation between Ukraine and Hungary highlights the critical importance of energy security in the region, as well as the economic stakes for both nations. Amid the ongoing energy crisis and political tensions across Europe, such interdependencies could have serious repercussions not only for these two countries but for the entire region.
How events unfold will depend on the negotiations and decisions made by the governments of both states.
