Hungarian Authorities Seize Cash, Gold, and Armored Vehicles from Ukrainian Cash Transport Crew.
Assets of Ukrainian Cash-in-Transit Personnel Confiscated in Hungary
According to TSN.ua: Hungarian officials have confiscated a substantial amount of cash, gold, and armored vehicles from Ukrainian cash transport workers who were subsequently ordered to be expelled from the country. At the time of the seizure, the detained individuals were not suspected of any crime and are listed as witnesses in the case. The criminal investigation is being conducted against an 'unidentified person' on suspicion of money laundering.
The detention of the Ukrainian personnel occurred on March 5th, when two armored vehicles belonging to Ukraine's 'Oschadbank' were stopped. The seven Ukrainians involved in the incident returned home on March 6th. Crucially, no criminal charges have been filed against them.
Statement from Immigration Authority Representative
Lóránt Horváth, a representative of the competent immigration authority, stated that 'the competent immigration authority issued an order for the expulsion of these persons.' However, he also noted that 'it is unknown to us whether proper legal representation or interpreter services were ensured during their interrogation.' This incident occurs against a backdrop of historically complex relations between Hungary and Ukraine, particularly since Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
This situation underscores the importance of adhering to international legal standards in detention and expulsion procedures. The absence of criminal charges may indicate that the detainees' actions did not violate Hungarian law, yet the circumstances of the asset seizure and their return to Ukraine raise questions about the rights and protections afforded to individuals acting as witnesses in such investigations.
This incident could have significant implications for Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, given that the individuals were not charged with a crime yet their property was still confiscated. It is vital that both countries adhere to legal norms and ensure proper legal support for persons who become witnesses in an investigation, as this can affect interstate trust and future cooperation in areas of security and human rights.
