Hungary Halts Diesel Fuel Shipments to Ukraine Following Pipeline Attack.
Diesel Fuel Supplies to Ukraine Suspended
According to TSN.ua: Hungary has announced it will cease diesel fuel exports to Ukraine until oil transportation via the Druzhba pipeline is restored. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed the supply halt, which is a direct consequence of the stoppage in Russian oil transit. This move impacts Ukraine's energy supplies amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The suspension follows a Russian military attack on January 27 against a key section of the Druzhba pipeline infrastructure near Brody, in the Lviv region. This strike halted the transit of oil to both Hungary and Slovakia. Minister Szijjártó stated that diesel deliveries to Ukraine will not resume until Ukrainian authorities restore the flow of crude oil through the Druzhba pipeline.
Energy Security Concerns
Hungary currently holds oil reserves sufficient for more than three months. Both Hungary and Slovakia are utilizing a provision granted by the European Union, allowing them to import Russian crude oil by sea until pipeline transport is re-established. However, Szijjártó suggested the supply halt is also politically motivated. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico has similarly accused Kyiv of delaying the restoration of transit.
"The situation regarding diesel fuel supplies to Ukraine remains tense, and the restoration of oil transit could be a key factor in improving this situation."

Meanwhile, the lack of diesel supply could negatively affect Ukraine's energy security, which faces numerous challenges during the war. The urgent need remains to repair infrastructure damaged by attacks and to establish stable fuel supplies for the country's economic recovery. While Hungary, with its reserves, can sustain its own needs, the situation for Ukraine could become critical without adequate access to energy resources.
