Hungary Supplies Nearly Half of Ukraine's Gas: What This Means for Transit.
Ukraine's Heavy Reliance on Imported Gas
According to TSN.ua: Ukraine continues to source nearly half of its natural gas from Hungary, which in turn receives this fuel from Russia via the Turkish Stream pipeline. Amid geopolitical tensions and limited options for alternative supplies, this dependence on Hungarian gas is becoming increasingly apparent. Experts highlight that Ukraine has few viable alternatives to gas imports from Hungary.
As Yuriy Korolchuk noted, 'It must be understood that traders won't pump gas from somewhere like Switzerland or Germany.'
Challenges in Gas Supply
It is worth noting that Ukraine only received test volumes of gas from Azerbaijan last year. While Azerbaijan supplies Europe with 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually, these deliveries are insufficient to establish a stable import flow for Ukraine.
'Looking at the overall picture, roughly 50% is the gas we receive through Hungary,' Korolchuk emphasized.
Another factor to consider is that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán recently announced a suspension of gas transit to Ukraine. This decision creates additional difficulties for Ukraine's energy system. In response, Ukraine may turn to Slovakia for gas supplies. 'We are getting this help from Slovakia,' Yuriy Korolchuk said, underscoring the importance of alternative routes in the current situation.
As a result, Ukraine remains vulnerable in terms of its gas supplies, particularly due to the lack of alternative import pathways. This highlights the critical need to diversify energy sources to ensure energy security.
The situation with gas supplies in Ukraine reveals a critical dependence on external sources, especially in an environment of geopolitical instability. The suspension of transit from Hungary could significantly impact Ukraine's energy landscape, emphasizing the necessity of seeking new alternative routes and suppliers. Restoring cooperation with Slovakia is one potential way to improve energy security, but for stable imports, Ukraine must more actively develop diverse gas supply sources.
