New Border Crossing to Link Ukraine and Moldova

According to Novyny.live: Ukraine and Moldova have agreed to establish a new vehicle border crossing point on their shared frontier, which will process both passenger cars and trucks. The crossing will be situated in Ukraine's Vinnytsia region, specifically between the existing checkpoints of Yampil and Cosăuți. Border traffic will flow across the Yampil Bridge spanning the Dniester River.

This new agreement builds upon a 1997 intergovernmental treaty that governs the operation of border crossings between the two nations. As of early 2026, there are approximately 17 crossing points along the Ukraine-Moldova border, which are either fully operational or partially functioning. This development is part of broader regional efforts to improve connectivity and economic ties in Eastern Europe.

Significance of the New Crossing

Ihor Klymenko, Ukraine's Minister of Internal Affairs, stated that the crossing will operate around the clock and will be open to both passenger vehicles and freight trucks.

He added that the signed protocol provides the legal foundation for launching the new checkpoint and allows for the allocation of funds for its construction within Ukraine's state budget. The opening of the Yampil–Cosăuţi crossing represents a significant step in strengthening cooperation between Ukraine and Moldova, while also simplifying border crossing procedures for citizens of both countries.

Expanding border infrastructure between Ukraine and Moldova is a crucial element for developing regional infrastructure and enhancing bilateral relations. This move aligns with growing needs for trade and civilian movement, particularly as both nations seek to deepen economic links and cooperation across various sectors.

The new crossing is expected to positively impact the flow of goods and services, while also fostering development in the border regions shared by the two states.
