Harvest Tomatoes by May: The Ultra-Early Varieties That Make It Possible.
How to Achieve an Early Tomato Harvest in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian growers can harvest ripe tomatoes as early as late May by selecting ultra-early maturing varieties and sowing seedlings on schedule. The key is choosing cultivars that mature in just 80 to 95 days from germination. With proper planning of the planting campaign, the harvest timeline can be significantly accelerated.
Sowing seeds in early March is recommended to enable harvesting in the final days of spring or the first week of June. For this early harvest, compact, determinate tomato varieties that grow no taller than 50–60 centimeters are best suited. Recommended early-yielding varieties include:
- ‘Sanka’
- ‘Debut F1’
- ‘Alpha’
- ‘Beta’
The ‘Sanka’ variety reaches a convenient height of 40–60 cm. ‘Debut F1’ is slightly taller at 65–75 cm, while ‘Alpha’ typically stays within 40–50 cm. The ‘Beta’ variety grows to about 50 cm, also making it suitable for early picking. These compact plants are ideal for gardeners with limited space or those using protective covers. Based on these characteristics, growers can select the most appropriate varieties for their specific conditions.
The Benefits of an Early Harvest
By following these sowing guidelines and variety recommendations, Ukrainian farmers and gardeners can enjoy their first tomatoes by the end of May. This provides a rewarding conclusion to the spring season and the chance to savor fresh, homegrown produce at the earliest opportunity.
Securing an early tomato harvest can offer significant economic advantages, as the market for fresh vegetables is particularly active during this period. Early tomatoes are in high demand among consumers, which can boost profitability for commercial growers. Furthermore, selecting the right varieties and adhering to proper cultivation techniques are important factors for enhancing regional food security and self-sufficiency.
