New System to Restrict Military Personnel from Gambling

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine is developing a mechanism to prevent active-duty soldiers from accessing gambling platforms while martial law remains in effect. The move aims to shield service members from the dangers of gambling addiction. This initiative is being spearheaded by Ukraine's Ministry of Digital Transformation, working alongside the agency PlayCity.

The planned system will introduce a user verification algorithm that automatically checks a person's identity when they attempt to log into a game. If the individual is confirmed as military personnel through official databases, their access will be denied. These restrictions will stay in place for the entire duration of martial law across Ukraine.

Why This New Approach Matters

Officials from the Ministry of Digital Transformation have emphasized that gambling operators will not see a person's military status. The system will only communicate that a restriction has been applied. This measure is designed to reduce the harmful effects of gambling on soldiers, particularly given the high stress and dangers of war.

Recently, a case in Lviv highlighted the urgency: a 21-year-old man agreed to collaborate with the enemy due to gambling debts and addiction. This incident underscores the need for the new system, which aims to prevent similar situations from occurring.

  • A Register of Individuals with Restricted Access to Gambling will be established for this project;
  • A separate Register of Military Personnel will also be created.

These steps represent a significant effort to combat gambling addiction among troops and to safeguard their well-being under martial law.

Implementing this system marks a critical phase in supporting soldiers who endure extreme stress and wartime risks. Protecting the mental health and security of military personnel is a top priority, especially during a prolonged conflict. This initiative could also serve as a model for other nations facing similar challenges.
