New optical illusion from TikTok: both eyes are gray, but your brain denies it

According to ТСН: The world is known for many optical illusions — from the hidden cigar in the brickwork to the famous "blue-gold" dress. However, a new illusion presented by biologist and BBC presenter Dr. Dean Jackson has made many users rethink their perception of color.

Gray or colored?

On his TikTok channel, the scientist showed a drawing of a girl's face, split in half by red and blue filters. Viewers are convinced that her eyes have completely different colors, for example, blue and yellowish. However, Dr. Jackson shocked the audience with the statement:

"both eyes are actually the same shade of gray."

Our brain wants to be "too smart." It analyzes the colored background as external filters and automatically "assigns" the color of the objects beneath them, trying to guess their real shade.

"Your brain perceives the background as two separate filters and cleverly calculates what the eyes should look like beneath them. In reality, both eyes have the same shade of gray, but your brain tells you otherwise,"

— explains the biologist.

To prove his point, the researcher superimposed gray stripes of the same shade as the eyes onto the image — and the illusion instantly disappeared, confirming his words.

Social media reaction

The video gathered numerous comments from perplexed users who admit that they feel deceived by their perception:

  • "I saw a blue and a yellow eye! Now it's hard for me to trust my own brain!"

  • "My brain is not my friend, it constantly plays tricks on me."

  • "They are NOT gray! Damn, how is this possible?"

Let us remind you that in this new illusion, like many others, science and the art of perception combine. It shows how our brain can distort reality through colors and light. Such experiments help us better understand how our perception works and provoke wide discussions in society.
