Hungary’s Election: The Prospects of the 'Tisza' Party

According to TSN.ua: Hungary’s opposition party, 'Tisza', stands a chance of victory in the upcoming election scheduled for April 12. However, to shift Budapest’s stance toward Ukraine, the party must secure a constitutional majority—meaning it needs to win two-thirds of parliamentary seats. Even if it prevails, the new government would face significant hurdles, as loyalists of Viktor Orbán would remain entrenched in the legislature.

Challenges for a New Administration

Viktor Orbán, leader of the 'Fidesz' party, has held power for roughly 15 years. Political analyst Ivan Lozovyi noted that even if Orbán is defeated, his party could obstruct the new government’s decisions at every level. He emphasized that

“the new administration would effectively be surrounded by hostile forces”

A victory for the 'Tisza' party at the polls could mark a pivotal step in reshaping Hungary’s policies toward Ukraine and other neighboring countries. Yet, without achieving a constitutional majority, its capacity to enact change would be sharply limited by the influence of Fidesz and its loyalists in parliament. This underscores the election’s significance not only for Hungary’s domestic politics but also for regional relations.
