Ukrainian Elections Could Cost Over 10 Billion Hryvnias, Officials Report.
The Rising Price of Democracy in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Holding elections in Ukraine could cost the state more than 10 billion hryvnias, according to Oleksandr Korniyenko, First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada. He stated that the expense of organizing a vote under current wartime conditions would be substantially higher than in the past. For comparison, a standard election cycle in 2019-2020 cost the country between 2 and 3 billion hryvnias.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also addressed the issue, confirming a readiness to hold wartime elections but only if conditions for security and stability can be guaranteed. Korniyenko's projection of costs exceeding 10 billion hryvnias underscores the immense logistical complexity of administering a vote during the ongoing national crisis. Organizing a national election during a large-scale war presents unprecedented challenges not seen in Europe for decades.
Logistical and Security Hurdles
The massive projected cost highlights the severe challenges Ukraine faces in upholding democratic processes during the war. With safety and stability cited as non-negotiable prerequisites, these factors could significantly influence the timing of any potential elections and the preparedness of electoral authorities.
