Paraffin candles emit carcinogens: how to choose a safe alternative.
According to ТСН: In Ukraine, especially during prolonged power outages, candles have become an integral part of home comfort. They are no longer associated solely with romance, but serve to light rooms and create a cozy atmosphere. However, it is important to remember that not all candles are safe, and their use can pose some health risks.
The resource Kobieta w INTERIA.PL emphasizes that many of the available candles are made from paraffin, which is a byproduct of oil distillation. This raises questions about their impact on health.
When burning paraffin candles, the flame does not reach a high enough temperature for complete wax combustion, releasing harmful toxins into the atmosphere, such as benzene and toluene — carcinogenic compounds that can also be found in diesel exhaust.
Impact of harmful substances
Regular inhalation of smoke from paraffin candles in closed spaces can negatively affect health. Those at risk include individuals with allergies, respiratory problems, as well as children and pregnant women.
The impact of benzene and toluene can lead to headaches, difficulties in breathing, and prolonged exposure increases the risk of developing asthma or cancer.
Furthermore, burning paraffin candles can release other harmful substances, such as formaldehyde and phthalates, which negatively affect the nervous and endocrine systems.
What alternatives are there
Candles made from soy wax, made from natural materials, are safer and more environmentally friendly. When burned, they do not release toxic substances in the same quantities as paraffin candles.
Soy candles also burn at lower temperatures, and high-quality products are often scented with natural essential oils, making them even safer for health.
Another natural option is beeswax candles, which are not only safe but also ionize the air, neutralizing pollutants.
How to choose candles
When buying candles, pay attention to the label, choosing products made of soy or beeswax. Check that the fragrances are natural and not synthetic, as the latter may contain phthalates.
The wick should be made from natural materials, such as cotton or wood; avoid metal cores, which can release harmful substances.
Don’t forget to pay attention to the intensity of the scent: a scent that is too strong or chemical may indicate the presence of artificial fragrances.
In situations where electricity supply is limited, candles can become an important element of comfort. However, to enjoy their atmosphere, it is essential to choose safe alternatives and properly assess health risks. Choosing candles made from natural materials not only improves air quality but also adds coziness to your home.
