Civil Aviation in Ukraine: A Possible Comeback?

According to TSN.ua: Discussions are heating up in Ukraine about the potential resumption of commercial flights, with budget carrier Wizz Air recently launching a recruitment drive. However, the company has not issued any official confirmation that it plans to restart flights to or from the country.

Wizz Air is actively preparing for a possible future revival of Ukraine's civil aviation sector by hiring new staff. Yet, reopening the skies would require extensive groundwork. For now, Ukrainian airspace remains closed to civilian aircraft—a restriction that has been in place for five years.

“It’s unrealistic—technically, operationally, in every way. Even if the company made that decision yesterday, flying is simply not possible.”

Representatives from Wizz Air have also stressed that “the campaign was in no way intended to create the impression of an (immediate) resumption of flights to or from Ukraine.” This suggests that, despite the hiring activity, no concrete steps toward restoring air links are currently in the works.

Scheduled Launch Dates for New Routes

  • Berlin – April 16
  • Prague – April 17
  • Krakow – April 22
  • Warsaw – April 23

These dates, however, do not relate to Ukraine. Instead, they mark other destinations that may be part of the airline’s broader strategy amid the ongoing situation.

The prospect of restoring air travel in Ukraine remains challenging due to the prolonged war and the closure of its airspace. While Wizz Air’s recruitment efforts signal some level of preparation, actual plans to resume flights to Ukraine are not yet being implemented. Any such move would demand significant effort and could take a long time, unless conditions on the ground change.
