Ukraine Introduces Advanced Tuberculosis Detection Methods

According to TSN.ua: Beginning in April 2024, Ukraine will roll out new approaches to diagnosing tuberculosis. A key change involves swapping the traditional Mantoux test for the interferon-gamma release assay, which significantly improves diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, GeneXpert systems can now identify TB in as little as four hours, marking a major leap in medical technology.

Treatment Updates and Patient Support Reforms

Treatment protocols are also being updated. Therapy duration has been shortened to 6–9 months, allowing patients to resume normal life more quickly. Recovery rates have shown a positive trend, climbing from 50% in 2017 to 72–75%, thanks to improved treatments and patient assistance.

  • Currently, about 70% of patients receive care on an outpatient basis.
  • 67% of patients benefit from medical and social support services.

It is important to note that TB diagnosis and treatment remain free of charge in Ukraine. Vaccination of newborns against tuberculosis resumed on January 1, 2024. Furthermore, an updated National Preventive Vaccination Schedule will take effect in 2026.

'Ukraine is now widely implementing new tuberculosis diagnostic methods,' said Volodymyr Kurpita.
'This has helped raise the recovery rate from 50% in 2017 to 72–75%,' added Oleksandr Zaika.

These changes aim to improve the country's overall epidemiological situation and make TB treatment more effective.

These innovations in TB diagnosis and treatment reflect Ukraine's efforts to combat the disease epidemic. By adopting modern diagnostic technologies and shortening treatment timelines, the country can significantly reduce TB prevalence and enhance patients' quality of life. Given global trends, these steps also underscore the importance of timely detection and treatment of tuberculosis within Ukraine's healthcare framework.
