Bad weather paralyzed the roads: how to travel safely during icy conditions.
According to ТСН: A severe storm is raging in Ukraine, causing significant problems on the roads. Cars are stuck in snowdrifts, and the number of accidents has increased dramatically. Unfortunately, the situation is unlikely to improve in the coming days.
Ukrtransbezpeka specialists have shared tips on how to reduce risks on winter roads.
Experts emphasize that even experienced drivers can find themselves in danger during icy conditions, heavy snowstorms, and drifts. Staying alert and vigilant on the road is the key to safety.

Condition of transport
Use winter tires specifically designed for such conditions. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the tire pressure, which decreases in freezing temperatures, as well as ensure the battery, brakes, headlights, and wipers are working, not forgetting about the fluids for them. It is also important to ensure that the license plate and mirrors are cleaned.
Speed and distance
Remember the distance, even if the road seems safe. On slippery roads, the braking distance can significantly increase. During icy conditions, do not exceed the speed and avoid sharp movements at the wheel.
Dangerous areas
On winter roads, familiar sections can become particularly dangerous, including intersections, uncontrolled pedestrian crossings, stops, bridges, and overpasses. It is necessary to adhere to traffic rules and speed limits to avoid accidents.
Manoeuvres
Sudden braking, acceleration, and sharp turns can lead to skidding. Therefore, it is important to use the pedals smoothly and steer carefully.
In case of a skid, do not attempt to brake sharply; rather, gradually straighten the movement. Be attentive to other road users, as pedestrians may inadvertently slip and fall onto the road.
Cargo and passengers
Improperly secured cargo on a slippery road can pose an additional danger. When transporting passengers in bad weather, it is necessary to closely monitor the driving conditions and the driver's state.
Severe weather has caused significant complications on the roads of Ukraine. Traffic is restricted in several western regions — Lviv, Rivne, and Volyn. The storm continues to move through Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, and Chernivtsi regions, as well as in Kyiv region.
This information highlights the importance of adhering to traffic rules in winter conditions. Bad weather requires caution from both drivers and pedestrians. Vehicle owners should prepare in advance for difficult road conditions to reduce the risk of accidents.Read also
