Maria Chala's Centennial Milestone

According to TSN.ua: Maria Ulyanivna Chala, a resident of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone, is celebrating her 100th birthday on February 2, 2024. She is one of the few who chose to remain living within the restricted area following the catastrophic 1986 accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant. Her story offers a unique human perspective on one of history's worst nuclear disasters.

Born in 1926, Maria Chala was 60 years old when the reactor exploded. Her 74-year-old daughter, also named Maria, came to support her mother on April 29, 1986. However, both women were evacuated from the zone on May 4th. Defying the official order, Maria Ulyanivna made the remarkable decision to return to her home in the contaminated zone just two months later, in June 1986.

Life in the Exclusion Zone

Despite the harsh living conditions, Maria Chala maintains good health and has avoided serious illness, according to Vera Ivanivna Veres, a former paramedic in the zone who now accompanies her. However, life remains difficult; the area suffered power outages from January 8th to 17th, 2024, and again on January 27th. The ongoing war in Ukraine has further strained infrastructure and services in the region.

Maria Chala's life is a testament to human endurance and the unbreakable spirit of those who refused to abandon their homes, despite immense hardship. Her centennial is not just a personal celebration but a poignant reminder of a history that has deeply marked countless lives.

This milestone underscores both Maria's personal story and the enduring symbolic significance of Chernobyl in Ukrainian memory and culture. The Exclusion Zone, despite its dangers, remains a powerful symbol of resilience. Her birthday also draws attention to the lasting consequences of the Chernobyl disaster and their continuing impact on the lives of people in the region.
