A 25-Year Study Reveals a Surprising Link Between Full-Fat Dairy and Dementia Prevention.
Full-Fat Cheese and Cream May Lower Dementia Risk, Major Study Finds
According to TSN.ua: A landmark 25-year study from Sweden's Lund University, involving over 27,000 participants, has uncovered a significant connection between consuming full-fat dairy products and a reduced risk of cognitive decline in later life. This long-term research provides compelling evidence on how certain foods can influence brain health as we age.
Key Findings from the Research
The data indicates that eating 50 grams of cheese with a fat content exceeding 20% daily can lower the overall risk of dementia by 13%. Furthermore, a regular daily intake of 20 grams of full-fat cream was associated with a 16% reduction in cognitive impairment risk. Notably, enthusiasts of high-fat cheese showed a 29% lower risk of vascular dementia specifically. A positive effect on Alzheimer's disease prevention was observed in participants who do not carry the APOE e4 gene.
Fermented dairy products like full-fat cheese and cream appear to benefit vascular health, which is directly linked to maintaining cognitive function.
"This association underscores the importance of dietary factors in preventing cognitive impairment in the elderly."
Emily Sonestedt
These findings open new avenues for dementia prevention, highlighting how full-fat dairy could be a tasty and beneficial part of an older adult's diet. The results may form the basis for future dietary guidelines aimed at preserving cognitive health. While the findings are promising, further research is needed to confirm the conclusions and understand the precise biological mechanisms behind this protective effect.
