January 1: What You Can and Cannot Do on the Day of Saint Basil.
According to ТСН: Today in the Orthodox calendar is celebrated the feast of the memory of Saint Basil the Great. He came from a well-known Christian family that gave the Church several saints. Saint Basil was raised by his parents – Basil the Elder and Emilia – in deep Christian faith.
Basil received his education in Caesarea, Constantinople, and Athens, where he studied rhetoric, philosophy, and classical literature. Later, he became interested in theology and Christian life. While studying in Athens, Basil met Gregory of Nyssa, with whom he later actively collaborated for the benefit of the Church.
After returning to Cappadocia, Basil chose the path of an ascetic and monk. His example combined strict asceticism with active service to people. He founded many monasteries and developed the first systematic monastic rule known as the "Rule of Saint Basil," which influences the monastic communities of the Eastern Church to this day.
His approach to monasticism was practical: he emphasized not only spiritual growth but also helping the poor, sick, and needy.
Saint Basil the Great became a pioneer of church charity. He created the "Basiliad" — a complex of buildings where a hospital, shelter for the poor, orphans, and travelers were located, which became a prototype for modern charitable organizations.
The Church Holiday on January 1 — The Circumcision of the Lord
The holiday is established in honor of the circumcision of Jesus Christ, which took place on the eighth day after His birth according to Jewish law. This day reminds us of Christ's full incorporation into the law and traditions of His people.
According to Moses' commandments, all males must be circumcised on the eighth day after birth. Thus, the Circumcision of the Lord emphasizes Christ's obedience to the Law and reveals His human nature.
The circumcision symbolizes God's covenant with Abraham and his descendants. This holiday demonstrates the unity of the Law and grace, as well as the preparation for Christ's future ministry. The circumcision was accompanied by giving Him a name, which has significant meaning in biblical tradition.
